A special visitor came to Qt headquarters yesterday as we hosted Norwegian Minister for Government Administration, Reform and Church Affairs, Rigmor Aasrud.
As part of her portfolio, Minister Aasrud is responsible for finding ways of improving efficiency and quality within the Norwegian public service.
After meeting the team, the minister and her staff toured the Qt offices, were shown some real world examples of Qt’s capabilities and then engaged in a presentation and discussion about Qt, open standards and flexible licensing models. A core theme for the meeting was 're-use'.
Daniel and Knut delivered some compelling demos of Qt's cross platform capabilities, and positive examples of code re-use and flexible licensing models. There was plenty of healthy conversation; the Minister actually requested that we take the meeting beyond the scheduled finish time.
It was a great opportunity for us to interact with senior government officials and share our vision for Qt, flexible licensing, open standards and the possibilities they create.
We got a good insight into governmental thinking and it was encouraging to see the interest they have in looking at open standards and flexible licensing options for delivering better services, less expenditure and greater efficiency in the Norwegian public service.
During the day a great proof point was driven home by guest presenters from ITI, whose home automation systems demonstrated to the government officials how an open standards based, open source, Qt-based project could potentially create great benefit in areas such as assisted living and aged care.
